Applications
Shrink sleeve flexo printing press.
Shrink sleeves put demands on a press that plain labels don't — thin heat-sensitive film, full-wrap registration and opaque white. Here's what a sleeve-ready flexo press needs, and the Alliance machines built for it.
The demands
What shrink sleeve printing needs
Shrink sleeve is printed on thin, heat-sensitive film (PVC, PET-G or OPS) that wraps the whole container, so the press has to be gentler and more precise than a paper-label press. UV-flexo does it well and economically for short-to-medium runs — provided the machine is set up for four things:
Thin-film handling
Shrink films (PVC, PET-G, OPS) are thin and heat-sensitive — the press needs low, stable web tension so the film doesn't stretch or distort.
Opaque white
Sleeves print on clear film, so a dedicated white station for solid, opaque coverage is essential.
Tight registration
Sleeve artwork wraps the whole container — registration must be tight and repeatable across the run.
Chill-roll drying
UV/LED curing with a chill roll cures ink instantly while keeping the heat-sensitive film flat and stable.
The press for it
Nova A8 — sleeves, labels and packaging in one
Alliance's flagship Nova A8 prints shrink sleeve alongside labels, lamitube, IML and flexible packaging — dual-servo web control for stable tension on thin film, combination drying with chill roll, and an 8–450 µ substrate range across 370–670 mm. Focused purely on labels and sleeves? The individual-servo Nova A5 runs PVC and PET shrink film with automatic registration control.
FAQ
Shrink sleeve flexo — common questions
Can you print shrink sleeves on a flexo press?
Yes. UV-flexo is widely used for shrink sleeves alongside gravure, and is often the more economical choice for short-to-medium runs. It needs a press set up for thin heat-sensitive film: gentle, stable web tension, opaque white, tight registration and chill-roll drying so the film doesn't distort.
What does a shrink sleeve flexo press need?
Thin-film handling with low, stable web tension; an opaque white station for coverage on clear film; tight, repeatable registration; UV or LED curing with a chill roll to keep heat-sensitive film flat; and the ability to run PVC, PET-G and OPS shrink films.
Which Alliance press is best for shrink sleeves?
The multi-substrate Nova A8 handles shrink sleeve alongside labels and flexible packaging with dual-servo web control and combination drying (including chill roll). For a focused label-and-sleeve press, the individual-servo Nova A5 runs PVC and PET shrink film from 12–250 µ.
Is UV or water-based ink used for shrink sleeves?
Shrink sleeve on film is usually printed with UV (or LED-UV) flexo inks, cured instantly and kept cool with a chill roll so the heat-sensitive film stays stable. Water-based inks are more common on absorbent paper substrates than on shrink film.
